“Too Much Devotion To Food”

Sweet Girl,
You don’t need to obsess.
I know you want to destroy this body
That puts you in distress.
But don’t you see how it’s trying
To protect you from yourself?
I know you’re frightened to change
But it’s ED who makes you feel like hell.

Your thoughts spin & scrounge
For every potential bite
As you push your plate away
And he wins another fight.
But your body knows better
Than to let him win
So it makes you obsess over the fact
That you are so very thin.

Your brain ignites little fires
All over the map of its thoughts
Until they converge into a blaze–
The scorch that you initially sought.
But the fire rages out of control,
And only you can put it out
By taming the “beast” who’s just trying to protect you
By leaving cravings in your mouth.

Sweet Girl,
I know it seems that you’re
Hopelessly devoted to food.
But can’t you see that’s just
your brain screaming
“Please, I require nutrients
In order to heal these wounds.”
